Stationary office furniture is for suckers

Okay, we’ve seen a lot of not-so-great designs with an “all-inclusive-furniture-environment” theme – looking in your direction here, “XZipit” - but! Check this one out.  It’s a dense foam cut-out-office-slash-wheelbarrow by Dutch designer Tim Vinke.  What’s a giant mobile office set used for, you ask?  I don’t know either!  But look at how great it looks, and it has not only a fold out surface but also an ottoman or something.  Take that, Äpplarö!

Nice tan, Turkmenistan!

I mean, I don’t know, but haha.

Know Arties: Weep little hobo clown, weep.

Ok, look at this!  I’ve talked about my girl-boner for Allison Shulnik ’round these parts before, when we tried to make sense of the whole “glop art” painting thing.  I’m actually starting to think that old Shulnik might actually be a more kick-ass animator than painter, because watching the above Grizzly Bear-soundtracked film “Hobo Clown” sent me into paroxysms of joy and sadness for little hobo clowns everywhere.  I mean, it just keeps going.  I’m pretty sure it’s like barfing funfetti frosting.  Just look at it!

1997 called, it wants us to have better parties

stilts_1

File this one under future party themes:

Berlin-based artist Hans Hemmert (the guy who made that balloon tank you keep seeing on the internet) filled a room with various-height stilts so that each guest could become exactly 6 feet tall.  BOOM:  Equal-height cocktail party time.*

This is obviously lovely and silly and is called “Level” (go figure).  It’s from 1997 so we’re not exactly breaking news here. The point, though, is the many future party themes this suggests:  the everyone-is-wearing-lobster-hands party? The blindfolded-but-also-wearing-headphones-that-make-it-sound-like-you’re-underwater party? Dream on, people, and dream big.

*This would also allow me to finally fulfill my dream of standing eye-to-eye with 6-foot Smartie Andrew, instead of craning my neck upwards as he dispenses his sage design advice. Le sigh.

USIN-e folded mirror

Wow, look at this inexplicable and lovely folded mirror in red paint & polished steel, Lisiere, by USIN-e designers.

Tokujin Yoshioka & Hermés do it

Hermés is going to have 10,000 of Tokujin Yoshioka’s babies and wrap them each in a dozen $375 silk twill Christopher Columbus scarves because this window display he put at the Maison Hermés store in Tokyo is so baller.  Or at least that’s what I’d do.

Zhili Goose

zhili-liu-birdlamp_1

Okay I know that headline’s a stretch.  Geese don’t sit on wires or in cages, and as we “journalists” know, you can only work the phrase one way or you lose your punch.  Anyway, it doesn’t matter because LOOK AT THIS GODDAMN LAMP.  It is part of a series of “Bird Lamps” by Shanghai designer Zhili Liu, wherein plain-jane bulb sockets are cast in bone china and mounted at an ever-so-slight angle – creating the effect of birds on wire and in cages.

These lamps are too rad and I feel unable to express with clunky english just how much they turn my crank.  As a gesture of appreciation to Liu I am going to show all of these images at once without a ‘more…’ link.  Look at them, internet!  Bask in their warm glow!

Laser threads & Red bulls

Red Bull Music Academy installation by Device

The award for Best Use of Blacklights this year (or maybe ever) goes to Device for this installation at the Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona (no, not that Red Bull).  What you see there is all thread that looks like lazerz – does it remind anybody else of that party scene in Hackers?  More pics after the jump.
